Review - Parents Information Network
Installing the software was very straightforward. The program autoloaded, requiring minimal involvement in the process. The program comes with excellent support material which gives clear guidance on the set up of the program and its use. All our reviewers commented on the ease with which the parameters of the filtering program could be changed , and particularly enjoyed altering the colours, graphics and sound on the portal pages. Parent reviewers were also impressed with the "time out" facility. They felt it was important to be able to limit the amount of time that children could spend on line and were also pleased to see that they could restrict their use to specific daily time slots. We feel that this facility gives parents greater control and enables them to monitor their children's use of the Internet.
In general our reviewers liked the "white list" approach adopted by BrowserLock to filter Internet sites. They felt that the facility gave parents greater control over the sites available to different members of the family and would prevent children from accidentally finding inappropriate sites. It was felt that this function would be of particular use to families who were new to using the Internet or families with young children where greater security is needed to filter out inappropriate material. Some of our more experienced Internet reviewers, however, felt that this method of filtering was far too restrictive. It was also thought that the program required a considerable amount of time from parents to research suitable sites and update the "white list" on a regular basis. Reviewers were impressed, though, with the instant bookmark facility which allowed them to add new sites to their "white list".
In summary, overall BrowserLock was thought to be a reliable filtering product with many excellent features. We consider it to be a quality program which provides good value for the home user.
