| What is BrowserLock? | ![]() |
| BrowserLock is a combination of both a "personal" Internet portal and a Web access filter. A portal is an Internet gateway - the first site, or the "launch pad", which users make their initial point of access to the Internet. A portal is usually a simple page, held on a remote Web server, that has links to other areas on the Internet. 48% of web advertising revenue is generated by sellers promoting their products and services on portals - a reflection of their function as "Internet road maps". | |
| BrowserLock is a user-defined, client-side portal, which resides on the user's own machine, and which also has the ability to restrict Web access to only those sites which are listed. That is, the user has complete control over which Web sites the portal offers links to. Users can update these sites by adding or deleting web-site addresses on the BrowserLock access list, and their "Personal Portal Page" is updated automatically. To get users started, BrowserLock comes ready supplied with the addresses of 3,000 sites which have already been catalogued by subject area. This list is by no means definitive - it is a guide for users. | ![]() |
| And so that users can choose the way they want their portal to look in terms of colours, fonts and graphics, BrowserLock's graphic interface is fully customisable for a "pluggable look and feel". | |
BrowserLock offers:
Structured, easy access to information
using indexed and catalogued site lists to organise information
Pluggable look and feel
with the ability to use graphics, fonts and colours specific to users’ personal requirements and/or taste
Control
a password holder chooses what web sites they want on their portal, presenting them in a way that best suits their own needs
Protection
for children, students, parents and businesses against ‘unacceptable content’ websites

Why develop BrowserLock? |
| As the amount of information we are presented with reaches overwhelming proportions, BrowserLock has been developed as a means for users to be able to structure when and how they use information on what is arguably one of the biggest perpetrators of 'overload' - the Internet. From individuals to huge corporations, accessing relevant information is key to ensuring success through better utilisation of time and resources. |
The Internet’s staggering growth rate both in terms of users and content has meant that now more than ever, the Internet is rapidly micro-segmenting. BrowserLock can be customised by Internet users with a list of sites of specific interest to them. In addition, this personal list of sites is categorised and indexed as the user wishes. This helps reduce the frustration associated with hours spent looking for specific information, thereby increasing productivity, saving time and money.
BrowserLock not only enables Internet users access to what they, and only they, need, it also disallows the accessing of ‘unacceptable content’ Internet sites. This has long been a concern for the education sector, parents and businesses globally. In the case of schools and parents, the imperative is a moral one, while for businesses there is also a legal dimension to consider, in that company directors are directly legally responsible for any pornographic or racist materials that any employee might download or view via company computer systems. The ‘time out’ feature that enables the password holder to set BrowserLock so that the Internet can be accessed for a given length of time – for example, children may only be allowed to log on to the Internet for an hour at a time – is also useful for these entities.
BrowserLock works in such a way that it employs a white list of only "acceptable content" sites. Access is not allowed to any sites that do not appear on this list, so that "All that is not specifically permitted is deemed to be prohibited" - as opposed to the black list approach, which works on the basis of "All that is not specifically prohibited is permitted". The power of what is, and what isn’t, on the list is with the password holder who has access to the password-protected BrowserLock Properties Panel. This panel also allows Internet sites on the list to be updated or amended at will, and the disabling of BrowserLock at any time to allow "free surfing".
And to get users of BrowserLock started, the software is supplied with a list of 3,000 sites categorised under headings such as Business, Education, Computing, Sport etc. This assists new Internet users come to terms with the vast amount of information that can be found on the World Wide Web. The lists are catalogued and indexed so that users have a starting point for their exploration of "cyber-space". As they gain confidence and knowledge, they can customise the lists so as to develop their own personal Web site portfolio.
Unlike conventional portals currently available, BrowserLock affords users the option of being able to customise the way it looks - rather than having these choices completely predetermined. Everyone searches for, categorises and indexes information in their own, personal way to suit their needs. BrowserLock does not profess to providing an exhaustive list of all categories, subcategories and website addresses that suit every user, nor is the choice of graphics, fonts and colours in line with everybody’s taste. To that end, the BrowserLock product simply offers a canvas upon which users can easily and confidently create their own way of accessing the World Wide Web.
